Everybody knows that credit bureaus exist and that they collect information about our bill paying habits. They sell that information to businesses for many purposes including those that give us credit. Most people also know that you can get free copies of your 3 major credit reports at

What most people don’t realize is that there are about 40 other companies collecting private information about us to sell to businesses. They collect all kinds of information which may, or may not, be accurate; much of which is considered private or confidential. Estimates are that about 1/4 of all that information is incorrect. According to the National Association of Consumer Advocates, these specialty information collection firms operate in the background and their information is seldom verified or challenged

You can access a list of all these information collecting companies and, in many cases, you can get a free copy of their report about you. You also have the right to correct any false information they have. Our attorneys recommend that you check your credit reports at least once each year.
